How Do You Sleep At Night?, explores the difficult and combative nature of my relationship to sleep through textiles, glass, and movement. This performance and installation work experiments with artistic outcomes that support sleep, creating a framework to expand the common understanding of a sleep aid.
I have never understood how someone can look forward to going to sleep. It’s not relaxing. I am deeply uncomfortable in my body; my limbs are somehow on wrong. I prop myself up with pillows to hold them in place. The stillness of lying in bed both over and under stimulates me, my body feels like it surely will explode. I stand up and go shake out the energy. The disturbingly slippery sensation of falling asleep unsettles me. I put on an audiobook to distract me from it. At some point I fall asleep, its hard won.
I engage with these supports almost as a ritual in the performance of How Do You Sleep At Night? The effort I am going to is clear, as the audience watches me slip into vulnerability. As I sleep in the gallery the audience is invited to consider their own relationship with sleep.
